| OBJECTS OF ATTENTION |
This is a very quick musical/game piece to be performed BY many and FOR a one-member audience
- can be repeated intermittently to other one-member audiences -- super fun!
An Object Holder (you?) walks up to a person.
- The Object Holder says to the person these exact lines: "I'm conducting an
experiment in perception. I want you to hold this [object] like this...
[Object Holder puts the object in front of his/her own face thus obustructing
his/her own vision] ...Now I want you to stare at this [object] for 10 seconds.
Count slowly and think about what you see. After 10 seconds you can put it [the object]
down.
- The Object Holder hands the person the object of attention
- The Object Holder tells the person to start counting
- As the person counts, The Object Holder will signal the entire ensemble to gather
quickly but silently around the person. When the person lowers the object of attention
this signals the downbeat for every member to sound for exactly 10 seconds and then stop.
The key to this piece is its sense of surprise. This means that other members should just
blend into the background while the Object Holder talks to the one-member audience. The
sounds should not be loud, but the chosen instruments should be simple enough to carry
around. Voice or body sounds may substitute for instruments. An object of attention
can simply be a box or anything large enough to block a person's vision. |
